MLM (Multi-Level Marketing), also known as Network Marketing, is by no means confined to the online world; in fact it has its roots long before the internet. Some very large and successful companies were built on, and continue to thrive, based on a MLM network model. The way it basically works is this: a company sells products or services through a vast network of independent distributors that sell at retail prices. The distributor usually pays some sort of joining fee or has to buy a certain quantity of the product to gain distributorship status. All MLM network marketing companies work with a solid business foundation. A parent company has a product or service to offer its customers. The networker’s responsibility is two-fold; to find other customers to buy the product and recruitment of new distributors.
Additionally, the network urges distributors to bring in other people to act in the same capacity. The referring distributor then earns commissions on the products that the referred distributor sells. If the distributor they referred also brings in other distributors, the original distributor also receives commissions on those sales and so on. This is the "Multi Level" component. For most people wanting to get into these kinds of businesses, the attraction isn't so much in selling the companies products; it's the conversion of buyers to distributors.
If a person is considering an MLM network opportunity, the following questions need to be asked:
1) Who is your upline? This question goes all the way to the top of the network. Investigate the entire upline just like you would a business partner you'd never met before.
2) What is the product? Become an expert on the product and/or service that’s being offered to clients. Know the competition as well.

The MLM business functions by enrolling unsalaried salespeople to sell products and meanwhile earn additional sales commissions based on the sales of people enrolled into their downline, an organization of people that includes direct recruits, recruits' recruits and so on. This arrangement is similar to franchises where royalties are paid from the sales of individual franchise operations to the franchisor as well as to an area or region manager. There can be multiple levels of people receiving royalties from one person's sales. New MLM members may be required to pay for their own training and marketing materials, or to buy a significant amount of inventory to start their career.
The compensation plans vary from one MLM business to the other, but there are basic plans in place. The Unilevel or Stairstep Breakaway plans are the oldest and most popular in the MLM business. These plans features two types of distributors either managers or non-managers. The pay method of these plans includes Baseshop overrides where there are overrides of managers from their subordinate non-managers. This method is the same as any other type of sales organization. Generational overrides are overrides of managers from the baseshop of managers who were previously their subordinate. Most plans compensate at least three generations of such managers. Executive bonuses are commissions for managers who exceed a posted sales quota. For example, 2% of the total company sales revenue may go to a bonus pool that is shared monthly to managers who exceed $10,000 in that month. Commissions are based on the aspect of cycles, where a distributor is paid a fixed amount whenever both legs achieve a certain number of sales units each. Commissions are paid incrementally when the sales volume in each leg matches.
In recent years, the MLM business has developed an image problem due to its resemblance to the illegal pyramid or other similar schemes. MLM businesses operate in the United States in all 50 states and in more than 100 other countries around the world. Many pyramid schemes try to present themselves as legitimate MLM businesses. In the legitimate MLM companies, commissions are earned only on sales of the company's products and/or services. No money may be earned from recruiting alone through sign-up fees, though money earned from the sales of members recruited is one attraction of MLM arrangements.
A commonly adopted test of legality is that MLMs follow the so-called 70% rule which prevents members "inventory loading" in order to qualify for additional bonuses. Which Internet marketer has not heard the horror stories of the multi level marketing (MLM) newbie who struck out for her or himself without much help from an up line and probably also by disregarding each and every ounce of good advice offered by many a website and tutorial and instead built a website advertising the product or service for sale? Yet to the fledgling marketer’s surprise, no hits are being registered and in spite of tweaking and pruning the site every which way from Sunday, the traffic is still only trickling in, most of it being accidental rather than targeted. The sad reality is simple: unbeknownst to the new network marketer, the lovingly crafted site she or he spent so much time working on was blacklisted! Do not let search engines blacklist your network marketing product site!

Do it one too many times and your site will no longer be included in the search results.
* Beware the lure of the mirror site. Once again, this methodology is a blast from the past when it was thought to guarantee a higher ranking within the search engine’s ranking hierarchy. Yet with the advent of optimization procedures, mirror sites are considered to be a relic of the past and those who continue to utilize the technology that in the past allowed them to submit the exactly identical site with a different URL to a search engine will find that neither web address will be accepted.
There are a number of other tips, tricks, and schemes employed by those who design websites for their network marketing product. Do not fall for the lure of easy rankings at the expense of the integrity of your site.
