Working from home has become the new American dream. Being able to cut the work commute out and walk from your bedroom to the home office is ideal. Being able to get rid of both you and your spouse’s commute can sound like the perfect way to build a successful business. Who better to start a home based business with than your spouse? Well, that is a question that can have a number of different answers.
Before you take on the challenge of building a home based business with your spouse, you should ask yourself as few questions. First of all, do you and your spouse have similar work ethics? This is an extremely important thing to ask yourself. If one of you is doing more work than the other one resentment is bound to grow. While you want to have balance in your home based business where both of you are contributing in different ways, you don’t want to end up in a 25-75 position.
Marriage is a challenge in itself. Before you start up your own business together, think about your relationship? How are the household duties split? Are things split evenly or is all of the work left for one person? Does this cause conflict in your marriage? After the issues are resolved, think about whether or not your spouse is really the type of business partner that you want.

Having a home based business may mean quitting stable jobs. While you or your spouse may want a reprieve from the 9-5 grind, the other party may not be ready for that. If that happens to be the case, then maybe both of you don’t need to start up the business. If having a home based business is your dream and your spouse is supportive, go for it. But don’t expect your spouse to be your personal assistant.

Now imagine what would happen if person A brought in people B1 though B100! The possibilities – and the income – would be seemingly endless! Within just a bit of time, person A would no longer have to be selling the product to make money; instead, she or he can simply relax, sit back, and enjoy the residual income generated by persons B, C and so on.
Of course, you do not have to be content with just working for one company and building a residual income network! Instead, why not sign up for two, four, or eight companies? If you are a sales-minded person with a knack for people skills, you will be able to put your soft skills to work and build any number of profitable networks. The trick is to find companies that offer a worthwhile product with a future, a generous compensation plan, and at the same time one where you will not be so far down the line that you are entering in a market that is already saturated with agents who are working for the company. Not all financial advisors who work on commission are biased, but the temptation is there. You’re safest sticking with hourly fee advisors, but in the end it’s really a question of the individual person. Partner with the person who makes you feel comfortable to achieve financial freedom.
The reality is that the more honest and reputable a financial planner is, the less money that their not-so-honest and others make. An honest, fee-only financial planner may only charge you a few hundred dollars for an afternoon session. But what about the not-so-honest financial planner who uses that three-hour session to sell you an overpriced investment that makes him a commission of thousands of dollars? The latter financial planner will get rich much quicker than the former, but will do so at the expense of the person they were supposed to help achieve financial freedom.
Another warning sign that your financial planner is thinking solely about themselves is whether or not they ask you about your goals. Remember that financial planning is first about your plans. Your finances come second. If a financial advisor opens the meeting with the line that it’s a great time to buy stocks, you should grab your coat and a fistful of mints from the candy dish and get out of there to achieve financial freedom. Unless you have a multiple personality disorder, you’re never going to cheat yourself. You know what’s best for you better than anyone else. You may not need a financial advisor for quite some time.

Knowing that you need to look into finding business mentors and actually going after it are two different things altogether. Of course, if you remember that the road to business failure is paved with good intentions, the urgency to get such a relationship set up and thriving is even more underscored. As a matter of fact, you may actually find that searching for business mentors in adjacent businesses is a valuable experience not only because of the wisdom they have to offer, but also because it will help you to understand a closely related business that you might consider branching out into at some point in the future. If all else fails, there are online business mentors who are willing to forego the face to face interaction and who will instead make themselves available to you on an email or chat room basis. There is nothing wrong with the approach, but it will not fulfill your need for day to day and face to face meetings which at times are the best way of receiving much needed mentoring. Additionally, you miss out on the opportunity to shadow your business mentors by accepting their invitations to meet them at their place of business and see them in action. There is so much to learn even from just watching interactions and body language! On the other hand, if such a relationship simply is not feasible, the online option is better than nothing!
