Picking a Franchise Idea

Having a lot of choices of home businesses is great. But those choices bring their own unique challenges. How do you pick the franchise that’s right for you?

First, take into account your skills and interests. If, for example, you don’t like working directly with the public, be sure that the franchise you consider doesn’t depend on you meeting and greeting people all day. If you’re good with numbers, you may want to consider a franchise in the area of business or tax services. If you hate to clean, the Merry Maids aren’t for you.

Consider the amount of time you expect to devote to the business. Some franchises are suitable for part-timers. Others aren’t. You may not be able to buy a particular franchise unless you agree to devote your full time to it.

Look at the costs involved. These can include both the franchise fee and other costs to get started. Franchise fees can run to $15,000 or more, making them much more expensive than just hanging a shingle out over the kitchen door. Look at the popularity of the franchise. Trends come and go in business just as quickly as in fashion. What may have been a hot franchise 30 years ago may not be quite the thing now. Try to project where the economy and the population is heading and see whether the franchise you’re considering will become outdated or be a perennial classic.

Finding the right franchise may be easier than you think. You may already be familiar with a particular franchise because you’ve eaten its product or used its service in your own area. But if you don’t know a specific franchise to investigate, here are some sources to help you find one: advertisements in newspapers and in the back of magazines commonly feature franchises for sale.

Trade shows for small businesses often have franchisers eager to sell their concepts. Reference books in your local library have directories listing all the national and international franchisers you can contact for more information. The internet also offers listings of borrowing easy money franchisers.

Keep in mind that franchisees have rights, too. What are you getting as a franchisee? Be sure you understand, up front, your rights as well as your obligations. Ask yourself some questions before you write out a borrowing easy money check.

Determine what your territory rights are. Where can you sell your product or service? Are there enough potential customers there to make a go of it? Is the franchiser prevented from selling other franchises within your territory?

Determine what you have to do as a franchisee. Are you required to generate a certain level of sales? Is there any time period for meeting the numbers? How flexible are these terms?

Determine what you pay to the franchiser. What is the up-front fee? What is the amount of your ongoing franchise fee? When do you have to pay this fee? Are there any additional fees you may be required to pay?
